Pete Waterman pledges support to HS2
22 February 2011, by David Howells
The HS2 rail link between London and Birmingham has found another supporter, pop mogul Pete Waterman.
The record producer is an avid rail enthusiast and patron of the Gloucester Warwickshire Steam Railway. He has claimed that the HS2 will bring Britain back in line with its European counterparts by having a high speed rail link.
"I just feel this country needs a high speed railway" he told the BBC. "We're the only country in Europe that hasn't got one. We're becoming worse than Spain. Spain has got high speed railways - we don't."
The high speed link looks set to see trains travelling at speeds of up to 250mph, cutting the journey time between London and Birmingham to 49 minutes.
The link could see Birmingham come within commuter distance of the capital, potentially prompting more people to rent property in Birmingham as a result. The rail link won't be in use, however, until December 2025 at the earliest.
The plans have been met with much criticism, with protesters claiming that contrary to what developers are keen to say, the link will not benefit the UK as a whole - just the cities it runs between. Waterman has argued that they are simply dressing up the 'not in my back yard' argument.
"They're doing everything to not make that sort of statement" he told BBC News. "They're going on about economics (and) the environment but really, with railways, you can make as much a game for it as against it."
