Old Post Office to become a restaurant
28 February 2011, by Elizabeth Smythe
The future of one of Warwick's oldest buildings might be at last secure, after a planning application was submitted yesterday, reports The Warwick Courier.
The three-storey Victorian building in Old Square has lain empty since it closed in the late 1990s, despite having been bought by a development firm last year. The derelict post office has been the source of much frustration to locals, who long to see the building restored to its former glory.
Recent developments suggest that might happen in the not too distant future.
Restaurant chain, Metro Bar and Grill, has put in an application for the ground floor and has requested a late licence. They plan to serve alcohol and play music until 1am, seven days week. Permission was granted in January to convert the first floor into flats.
The restaurant and bar would be a welcome addition, boosting Warwick's nightlife and potentially serving as a selling point for those looking for rental property in Warwick, rather than central Birmingham. It could create more jobs and also attract those tenants looking for a lively nightlife.
Chris Swann from Colbalt told the The Warwick Courier: "A lot of money will be spent on the high quality fit out, as has been done on the front of the building. It's going to be a long time - there's no time frame on it at the moment, but we want to create the right ambience.
"We've done a good refurbishment of the outside, by moving the windows and having someone who specialises in church refurbishment."
