HS2 proposals get support from Greengauge 21 report
16 February 2011, by David Howells
The much contested HS2 rail link between London and the West Midlands got a much needed boost as a report suggests that the link will benefit many smaller towns in the area.
The report by pro-HS2 group Greengauge 21 suggests that towns including Kenilworth, Bicester, Lichfield and Winslow would benefit from the developments by getting faster, more regular services.
On the Greengauge 21 website, Director Jim Steer wrote, "services which simply cannot be fitted on today's network will become viable once HS2 is built. Non-stopping inner-city services from the North and the Midlands to London will transfer across to HS2, making space on the West Coast Main Line for more freight on rail and more local services."
"Towns and cities along the route will be better off. Rail services will be faster, more frequent and with much better connections" Steer suggested.
It has long been argued that the HS2 link will benefit those living and working between London and Birmingham, with the proposals allowing the West Midlands to be within easy commuter distance of the capital. Property in Birmingham has been forecast to see a boost if the controversial plans get the green light.
The report follows a "noisy protest" at Kenilworth where anti-HS2 protesters played a recording of the noise levels the HS2 would be expected to make.
Joe Rukin from the HS2 Action Alliance told the Leamington Observer, "HS2 will damage or destroy hundreds of miles of countryside, ancient woodlands, National Trust properties, other sites of architectural importance, wildlife habitats, businesses and productive farmland."
