Decision on new property to be made
2 March 2011, by Chris Taylor
Available property to rent in Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth could increase dramatically if plans proposed by Warwick District Council to create 12,000 new houses and flats go ahead.
The Warwick Courier reported that a draft consultation document will soon be available for discussion about the number and location of the new homes.
Land earmarked in the paper for the construction runs between Whitnash, Warwick Gates and Bishops Tachbrook. Hundreds more properties could be erected between Cubbington and Lillington; with green belt land near Kenilworth also up for consideration.
The council has sought public consultation on the amount of houses after an imposed 12,000 home development plan was scrapped by the national government. A survey was released to local residents, asking them to pick between 250, 500 or 800 new homes being built per year - the equivalent total of 3,750, 7,500 or 12,000 houses and flats.
According to the Kenilworth Weekly News, the proposal papers described 800 new homes as being the "most realistic maximum level" achievable.
However, should only 500 homes be built a year, the council would still be able to improve roads and create schools with the development money it will receive for the builds. It can then also concentrate on job creation and attract new business from the local area.
If only 250 homes were approved, then the council would question the amount of growth possible for local businesses, adding in the paper: "To allow no more would be contrary to the Government’s aims to grow the economy."
If plans are approved, a formal consultation period will run from mid-March until June.
