Consultation begins on HS2 link
28 February 2011, by David Howells
The government is set to begin its public consultation over the proposed HS2 rail line between Birmingham and London.
The investigation, led by the parliamentary transport committee, will look into the arguments that pitch an economic boost and better transport links against the potential damage to swathes of British parkland.
Transport secretary, Philip Hammond, has claimed that the project could deliver around £44 million worth of benefits to the UK economy, boosting property in Birmingham and the capital, by bringing the commute down to under an hour.
"HS2 will be a piece of national infrastructure which will bring benefits to Britain as a whole," he told The Telegraph.
"Of course we will do everything we can to mitigate the impacts on areas like the Chilterns, but projects like this have to be decided on the basis of national interest and the overall net benefits it will bring to Britain."
The projected extension of the line could also see links from Birmingham to Leeds and Manchester developed further, placing the 'second city' at the centre of Britain's rail links. This, too, would further develop Birmingham's economy and see property in the area experience a much greater demand.
Lizzie Williams, chairman of the Stop HS2 group is unconvinced, calling the project in BBC News: "A complete waste of taxpayers' money when we can least afford it."
